5 out of 5 stars This is a great grill!   August 18, 2010

Well-made, heavy, every part of it combines to achieve a perfect grilling experience. I have a large gas grill for several people but this is perfect for one or two. Results are outstanding. I use the top (the actual grill piece) upside down-- that way it's an inch or so closer to the coals (and I have the grilling skills to use it that way, if you don't, use it in the conventional way --i'm sure that way is just as good) and I get astounding results. There is almost nothing that could be improved on this remarkable grill (I say almost because, if I owned the company, I'd figure out some way to engineer the draft slide to let air in from two direction at once--but that's minor because the slide works fine as it is). I have even come up with a homemade hood made from two layers of extra heavy reynolds wrap, sort of an oval bonnet, which i use for corn and things like that which i pop on a few minutes before the meat-- the meat cooks super fast. (Did I mention that i use natural charcoal and start the coals in a separate charcoal starter (Walmart has them in its garden dept= not expensive)--follow its instructions and then pour the hot coals in the cooker, put the grill on, let it get hot and 'get cookin'--perfecto and, dare i say, even a little fun.

5 out of 5 stars The Grill for the rest of us   August 12, 2010

If jumbo utensils, funny aprons, an adoring crowd, and a thousand square inches of grill are you thing, this won't do it.

This is the grill for the REGULAR, as in 3-5 nights per week, year round, griller. This is the the grill for the fanatic live fire cook. This is for the one who needs to 'play with your food' and experiment with the heat and no cover. Eighteen game hens with two dozen burgers under the lid just doesn't compete with a serious sate or seasoned cut with veggies.

Here, you can cook for two. Plate something special for your significant one rather than scooping up for the line. Shop the interesting veggies and grow interesting marinades. Light a chimney of charcoal every evening. Cook.

Rhapsody? Yeh, but I do more different recipes a week on this habachi than I did on my 22inch Weber each year. I can ziplock a dozen choices on a Sunday afternoon and grill them with one to two dozen briquettes each day all week. The Weber is a great weekend base, but the weekday flavors ... Well, they kick tastebuds.

Along with what others said, its good overall, but needs practice. Don't whip it out to impress your friends without a few test runs.

Its a tad irritating that the front door flops open when lifted by the handle (talking to you lodge). When you lift it you must be VERY slow and careful or hold the front door shut or it will clank open further unbalancing the grill, making it lean more. Don't try picking it up with hot dogs on there, they'll all be on the floor.

Its far deeper than it needs to be. Thinking of putting in a grate to save charcoal. One layer should be all one needs in a hibachi, this, being similar design should be no different, but unless you flip the grill over, its too far away for one layer of charcoal. It takes something like 35 briquettes to cook a burger that comes out more BBQ than electric broiler. If you've looked at the videos some have done on youtube. Their levels are more along 45-60 briquettes to "fill" the fire pit. I can get similar results from my full scale webber using similar amounts of coal ( the webber takes up too much patio and shed space btw). Not to say you couldnt cook something with one layer of coals, but it will be dry and or take forever.

Having no sides at all to the cooking surface make it a poor device to cook thick things. the radiant heat cooks from the bottom, but any breeze blows the heat right away. I've cooked a couple thick burgers/steaks where the top and bottom were well seared and leeward side was cooked through, and the windward side was raw.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully make and works great   July 15, 2010

After some of the cast iron junk I have bought from Asia, it is a pleasure to receive a product with excellent metallurgy and casting. Very well finished with all rough casting edges removed and being pre-seasoned allows usage without having to season it before first use. I have only one slight gripe. That is the emblem in the middle of the grill which does not really interfere with the grilling but does keep certain foods from receiving the grill lines from cooking. It is big enough to easely grill enough food for four or more people and the clean up is easy. Overall, I highly recommend this product for someone looking for a smaller grill with very good performance and high quality of manufacture.
